Becoming a
Dementia- Friendly
Community

By Morgan Leger

Lunenburg is just a few steps closer to finally becoming an Age and Dementia Friendly Community. During her report on the initiative’s progress to the Selectmen, Susan Doherty, Director of the Eagle House Senior Center, made it clear that this topic needs to be brought to the attention of people to show what action is taking place.
“People with dementia really need to be treated with respect, have a place to go with no stigma or anything like that,” said Doherty. “They want to do things, their care partners want to go places with them. Dementia Friendly America is just an initiative right now. It’s getting big.”
According to research from the Dementia Friendly Massachusetts Initiative, an estimated 5.4 million people in the United States and more than 130,000 of Massachusetts residents are living with dementia. This is a term for changes in thinking such as memory loss, difficulty planning, and communicating. This can possibly be caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other conditions.
Currently, there are efforts underway to make Lunenburg a dementia friendly community. This is will help enable people living with dementia and those who are about them to live full and engaged lives in a community that is informed, safe and respectful.
