Letters to the Editor
Dear Lunenburg Residents and Fellow Voters-

This being the first openly contested Selectman race since 2014 (when I last ran for Selectman), I have paid close and careful attention to all the candidates: hearing them in the candidates’ debate, at Town Meeting and, at various other public meetings (both live and via YouTube recordings); reading their answers to questions in the Lunenburg Ledger and online at their websites and social media venues. I have also gotten the chance to meet each of them, too. They all have ideas and plans about the future of Lunenburg of which they are passionate, many which can (and should) be explored further. I applaud all of them for their energy and effort in running a public campaign (not easy, in and of itself) and their willingness to step forward to serve the Town.
In the end, however, after weighing all their ideas, answers, platforms and approaches to town government, I will be voting for Michael-Ray Jeffreys. I believe both his professional and personal experiences have honed the skills necessary to be an effective Selectman: excellent communication skills (both written and spoken), careful listening skills and, the ability to work with large groups of people working to gain consensus. His time on the Planning Board and the Charter Review Committee have highlighted his ability to grasp subjects of complexity and to understand (and speak to) their various components, many of them nuanced – he understands the details but doesn’t lose sight of the whole picture. He is open to contrary opinions, will listen to counterarguments and will weigh for himself the merits of all input before (and even after) forming his own conclusion on any issue. He has demonstrated good analytical skills and very solid reasoning principles and is able to present them logically and clearly. Lastly, he has the temperament and demeanor suited for the position: steady and even-keeled, not quick to anger or agitation – a quality vital to any open and constructive discussion.
I did not arrive at this decision quickly or without intent analysis. Electing people to serve in town government is too serious a subject for me to treat lightly. Endorsing candidates is also not something I take lightly. I hope you feel the same about your votes and I hope that on Town Election Day, May 19th, that you will vote, as I will, for Michael-Ray Jeffreys for Selectman.
Respectfully,
Tom Alonzo
Lunenburg
