In the past (and presently) Lunenburg has had the St Bernard’s Bernardians and the Ayer Panthers as fierce rivals.
In the fashion of new traditions here at LHS, there was a new addition to the list of rivals, the girls of the class of 2010 vs. the girls of the class of 2011.
Last Tuesday’s game consisted of the Junior girls vs. the Senior girls. The game was intended to be a flag football game, but at times it seemed we were all watching a normal football game, with the occasional spine-chilling tackle. Man, those girls played hard!
In school, there had been a good amount of tension leading up to the game day, and I’d be willing to bet a lot of those girls decided to take their anger out during that game. Even though the game had a few dirty plays within it, there were great shows of athleticism, confidence, and teamwork.
The Senior girls ran hard all night, and their passing game was spot on. For example, QB Paige Bigelow connected with Sarah Wood in the end zone with Brady-Moss precision to put the Senior girls on top by two touchdowns. For their running game, they blocked well, and with the speed and agility from Sarah Cote, and Chelsea Hudson at running backs, and the power and skill of Karly LaManna at fullback, they were able to move quickly down the field. On defense, Seniors Alicia Chapdelaine and Addie Howard showed great tenacity and athleticism by leading the defensive line and breaking through the Juniors offensive line, forcing them to scramble a lot, pushing most of the plays to the outside.
The Juniors also played a good game on both ends. Their defense was able to put up a good fight against the Seniors, but on some plays Sarah Cote was just too fast for the Junior’s defense. Molly Poirier, the Juniors running back, played a great game, and really had the Seniors offense working hard. Mackenzie Flagg, also of the Junior class, played decent center on offense. Unfortunately for the class of 2011, the Seniors played a very good game, and ended up winning by 3 touchdowns.
This year’s game ended up having a good turnout of spectators, and the game was intense, and entertaining to everyone who decided to go. Just another fun and exciting tradition that Lunenburg High School successfully keeps going for one more year.
