Water rate increase frustrates officials and residents

Penny Roberge was “shocked beyond belief” when she viewed her statement from the Lunenburg Water District recently to find that there was a 53 percent increase in her water bill.

 

While Roberge said she was informed that there was going to be an increase in water rates, she did not think it would be so exorbitant.

 

A few weeks before receiving her bill, Roberge said she found a small postcard in the mail from the Lunenburg Water District that stated that there would be a rate increase on all segments of the water bill.

 

Roberge said she thought her minimum usage would simply go up from $52 to $60. So, she was quite surprised when the statement she received stated that she owed $82.

 

Before the new rates were added onto residents’ bills, customers simply paid a minimum fee of $52.50 if they used up to 700 cubic feet of water. If they used more than that, they would be charged additionally thereafter.
