Varsity Knights finish soccer season Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to Nipmuc
By Michael James LeClair
The Lunenburg boys’ soccer team’s season came to an end Tuesday night.
The third-seeded Blue Knights welcomed No.11 seeded Nipmuc Regional of Upton to Lunenburg Tuesday night as the two clashed in a Central Mass. Division 2 Quarterfinals match-up on the FieldTurf.
The hosts dug themselves an early hole and never recovered, falling 2-0 to prevent them from a trip to the semifinal round. Lunenburg finishes the season with a 13-4-1 record.
“I thought we showed a lot of resiliency tonight and played pretty well against Nipmuc. We had a little trouble in the middle and the breaks didn’t go our way,” said Lunenburg head coach Mike Gutzler following the loss. “Defensively I thought we were OK. I just don’t think we controlled the middle like we had in other games.”
The Blue Knights advanced to Tuesday night’s contest thanks to a 4-0 home win in the opening round against No.14 seed St. Bernard’s on Saturday night.
