Use your words with care

By Vera McCarthy

There is an excitement in the air.  Even though it is still summer weather, preparation for return to school is creating a buzz.

Shopping for new school clothing and the anticipation of new teachers tops the conversation.  It’s a new beginning, a fresh approach to learning.

I remember when I was the student and then my children were the students.  One thing always remained the same.  Words can set the tone for the new school year and the self esteem of those students.  I used to worry about art classes.  I am not an artist, and I struggled with it every year.  My Mother used her words in the most positive approach to my worry; she said “artists do not always use paints and pens to create, an artist can create with words.” I felt so much better about that thought and decided to develop my writing skills.  It was a thought that followed me though my life.  Another time I was confused because I had this drive to try every club that I could.  I loved joining, trying new ideas and being part of groups.  I voiced that confusion to my Mother and she used her words to give me perhaps the best gift of my life; she said, “never be afraid to reach out and try to expand your visions, you will be a late bloomer.”  With those words, she gave me the gift to explore who I would become.  I used those same words to one of my daughters on her journey.  It is the gift that keeps on giving!

So, I love this time of year, when everything is new and children have a clean page to begin the next step of their journey.  Give your children or grandchildren a gift that will last them a lifetime.  Use your words to encourage and lift spirits, in the process you will have a 10 day and give the same to those whose lives you touch.
