Town petitions court to establish utilities company

The pioneering spirit is alive and well in Lunenburg.
Tuesday afternoon, a program cosponsored by Unitil, the Lunenburg Library and the Lunenburg Green Community Task Force was introduced during a press conference at the Lunenburg Library that will allow homeowners to see where their utility dollars are going. Lunenburg is the first town in Massachusetts to participate in the CUT the CARBON program (see page 10 for more information.)
Tuesday night, the Board of Selectmen (BoS) unanimously decided to petition the Massachusetts courts to allow Lunenburg to “acquire the property of its independent operating electric company.” With the backdrop of the “Tea Party” in Boston this week, Lunenburg will essentially be trying to dump Unitil’s “tea” of high rates and lackluster service.
The BoS met with members of the Utilities Task Force (UTF) and member Carl Klempner explained some programs aimed at trying to improve utility service.
He explained that he is trying to find a place in cyberspace for citizens to learn what incentives and feedback are available because there are a lot of programs that exist but are hard to find.
