Selectmen talk trash at Tuesday night's meeting

There was plenty of trash talk during Tuesday night’s Selectmen’s
meeting when the board discussed a messy situation regarding a group
of trash receptacles on Lakefront Avenue.
Last month, Selectman Steven deBettencourt voiced concern about the barrels overflowing with trash, as it presented a problem for residents and the surrounding environment. deBettencourt said he had called Waste Management to have the barrels emptied in the past and the five barrels
were emptied with some regularity.
However, Town Manager Kerry Speidel said that trash buildup is a regular issue in that location but that Waste Management was not required to empty them for the town.
“We’ve researched the issue of trash barrels on Lakefront Ave. not being emptied regularly - every few months this comes up. According to the existing contract we have with Waste Management, those barrels are not included. The town does not pay to have them picked up,” she said. “It has been done by Waste Management as a community service when they have been asked by residents in the area.”
Speidel said that because these trash barrels (32 gallon containers) are not part of the town’s contract, drivers don’t often remember to pick them up, especially if they are not accessible because of snow.
