Retirement of Townsend School District’s business manager not a “deal stopper”

Superintendent Loxi-Jo Calmes expressed concern Friday that merger talks between Lunenburg and North Middlesex Regional School District may be prolonged due to the retirement of Townsend’s School District’s Business Manager, Gerald Martin.
Calmes said this new development might delay the decision on whether to merge the two districts past the state’s November deadline.
There is a “general consensus that it was too aggressive a timeline and won’t be happening in light of the developments in the last couple of weeks,” Calmes said in a phone interview with The Lunenburg Ledger.
“Dr. Maureen Marshall indicated that it would have an impact on our ability to move forward as quickly as possible,” Calmes said.
Several calls were made to Superintendent Marshall’s office, but were not returned as of press time.
Calmes added that there is a lot of work to be done and emphasized again that the timeline put in place to have a decision by November was aggressive.
