Regionalization discussions suspended

By Matt Stewart

The Lunenburg School Committee put a hold on discussions with the North Middlesex School District regarding school regionalization, on St. Patrick’s Day evening at the Brook’s House.

Committee member Michael Mackin made a motion that the Lunenburg School Committee recommend that the Lunenburg School Regionalization Planning Committee not continue discussions with North Middlesex regarding regionalization.  Committee member Milree Keeling then amended the motion, stating that discussions not be continued “at this time.”  The motion passed unanimously through the Committee.

Keeling noted the importance of leaving the door open to regionalization discussions in the future if plans for consolidation and renovation in the Lunenburg school system are not voted upon at Town Meeting.

“I feel that we have a unique opportunity that will not be easily revisited with the MSBA (Massachusetts School Building Authority) to pursue the renovation of the High School… and operate three buildings in the district instead of four,” Keeling said.  “If the Town Meeting doesn’t take advantage of this unique opportunity… I think we are going to need to revisit the remaining options.  I strongly support putting our eggs in this basket, and there’s no rush on regionalization discussions.”

Mackin cited major concerns regarding some of the core reasons why the school system would regionalize with North Middlesex.
