Questions have been raised regarding dog ownership in the town of Lunenburg following a public hearing on January 12 regarding assault claims John MacLure and Kathy Remse of May’s Field Road against their neighbor’s Phyllis and Allen Assetta’s two American Staffordshire Terriers.
Selectmen decided to take no action regarding the Assetta’s dogs, provided that they adhere to Animal Control Officer Kathy Comeau’s demand that the dogs be restrained any time they are on or off their property.
Without a set leash law in Lunenburg or in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Comeau has told The Ledger that there are a few things that dog owners can do to prevent their dog from causing trouble and a potential Board of Selectmen hearing.
“Pay attention to where your dog is at all times, and to be aware of its surroundings,” advises Comeau. “We do have a restraint law in Lunenburg. You don’t need to have your dog on a leash, but if there’s a complaint about an animal, I have to order a restraint if necessary.”
Owners that do not obey Comeau’s order or if the person who issued the complaint is not satisfied with the outcome may be subject to a Selectmen hearing where additional steps may be taken to ensure the public’s safety.
