Proposed school reconfiguration raises questions

By Kristen Levine

Held in the high school auditorium this past Wednesday,  the Lunenburg School Committee held an informative town meeting to answer questions and concerns from residents regarding the reconfiguration of the school system.

“What we intend to do this evening is a brief review of work already done,” said Board member Mike Mackin. “We have been discussing facility needs of the schools for quite some time. Back in 2007 we began to look particularly at the needs of the high school. At the time there was no movement from the state on building new schools, while they themselves revamped the old school authority into the Massachusetts School Building Authority [MSBA].”

During that time of departmental upheaval, Mackin went on to explain, the School Committee studied and identified the needs of all school buildings, emphasizing  the high school.

“[The MSBA] began to accept proposals again, so we submitted a letter of interest for the high school, T.C. Passios’ Elementary School, and Turkey Hill Middle School.” Mackin said.

The letter of interest was the first step in approaching a radical reform of Lunenburg’s school system, culminating into a proposal to rid the town of its current three separate schools and merging the middle and high schools into one building.

The proposed joining of middle and high school is seen as the most favorable option by the Committee, instead of the costly theoretical “renovation[s] or completely new building[s],” as mentioned by Mackin towards the end of his opening statements.
