One Last Chance for the Boys’ Basketball Team

By Matt Stewart

Last week The Ledger reported that the Lunenburg High boy’s basketball team had clinched their second consecutive District Tournament appearance.

However, after deadline, the squad surprisingly earned an invitation to the Clark University High School tournament. In order to qualify for Districts, Lunenburg must post a winning percentage of .500 or better and since the Blue Knights fell in their regular season finale to Oakmont Regional last Friday, their overall record dropped to 9-9 (.500), and coupled with the additional game(s) of the Clark Tournament, the plot was simple. Win against a highly potent Millbury team in the first round, this Monday at 2:45 (at Clark University) and the Blue and White are in to Districts, whereas a loss drops Lunenburg below .500 and they no longer qualify to make the Districts.

“On Thursday it was looking like we weren’t going to make the Clark Tournament,” Lunenburg head coach Jon Economo said. “So the day before the Oakmont game we had actually qualified for the post-season (Districts). But once they selected us as being part of the Clark Tournament, we have another game that we could win or lose which could now put us below .500.

To be honest we didn’t think we were going to make (the Clark Tournament), it’s an unusual year if you make it at 9-9. It was fortunate that we made it, but it put us in a different spot.”

To be eligible for the Clark Tournament the school must be a non-city school with a total population of 600 boys or less. This year marks the 71st annual Clark Tournament, and 36 teams meet the eligibility criterion (16 get into the tournament). The tournament is broken up into two brackets (large schools and small schools), which feature eight teams.
