Mother recalls nightmare of having sons home alone when robbery occurs

It was a mother’s worst nightmare.
Working on what seemed to be a normal Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park, Wendy Harunkiewicz received one call from her son, Cory, which she will never forget.
Cory, 12, following directions he learned from his mother, called her about a suspicious individual knocking on the doors of the home.
What seemed at first an innocuous visitor, turned out not to be so friendly, as Cory reported to his mother that the man would not leave the home and started knocking on the front door, which is never used.
“He saw someone standing on a bulkhead, looking in,” Harunkiewicz said remembering the incident that occurred Jan. 2 in broad daylight.
When it was clear that these individuals were not going to leave, Cory took his brother Bradley, 9, to hide in the attic and called police.
Those three minutes when Cory was on the phone with police were the most difficult for Harunkiewicz, as she couldn’t get through to her son.
“It was horrifying,” she said.
Worried sick, Harunkiewicz called the police to find out Cory was indeed on the other line with them. But the long ride home from Boston was painstakingly hard, as Harunkiewicz did not know if anything would happen to her sons.
“Getting there and getting home felt like five hours,” Harunkiewicz said.
Listening to her son whispering to her that he could hear one of the suspects allegedly breaking into the basement door did anything but calm her nerves.
