Melee Breakout at Shady Point

By David Grossman

Last Sunday, June 26 at approximately 5 p.m. multiple fights broke out at the Shady Grove Campground.

According to Lunenburg Police Chief Daniel Bourgeois, five police officers from Lunenburg had to take control of an unruly crowd of several hundred people. Two people were arrested for disorderly conduct and two more were taken into protective custody (See police log on page 18 for details). Shirley police were also summoned to the scene and took control of the campground traffic.

According to Bourgeois, an extremely large crowd was watching a band performing live at the campground. A fight broke out near the stage when a Shady Point employee was allegedly punched in the face. Bourgeois said that at some point, as the audience moved towards the exit, the crowd became uncontrollable.

The crowd was described in the police reports as being incorrigible, as many of the patrons were intoxicated. When the fights broke out, three Lunenburg police officers were previously assigned as detail officers and two more officers were dispatched.

“I will be meeting with the proprietor of Shady Point soon to discuss safety issues to try to prevent an incident like this from happening again,” said Chief Bourgeois in a phone interview on Tuesday.

Multiple phone calls made to the proprietor of Shady Point Campground were not returned.

According to a separate incident report, a fight broke out in the women’s room.

Iara Lima reported that someone whom she only knew by first name assaulted her in the women’s room. Monday evening, Lima filed an assault charge at the Public Safety Building.
