Unstoppable.
That’s the only way to describe the Lunenburg/Ayer hockey team’s play in year 2010.
Since January began the Blue Knights haven’t been beaten, and have notched victories over such Division 3A powers as Oakmont Regional (15-1-1, 8-1-1 Coughlin Conference) and Fitchburg/Monty Tech (13-1-2, 6-1-2 Coughlin), all while amassing an astounding record of 9-0-2 in that time frame.
Monday night’s showdown featured Murdock/Athol which was fighting for a tournament berth, and what a battle this contest was. The game was tied three times, before Lunenburg/Ayer senior Tyler Broc scored the game winner in the third period in a 5-4 thrilling win at Fitchburg State College’s Wallace Civic Center.
“We haven’t lost a game since our Christmas tournament,” said Lunenburg/Ayer head coach Eric Short. “We were 2-4 now we’re 11-4-2 (5-2-2 Coughlin). We’re moving, and I was actually glad it was this type of game tonight, we got playoffs coming up and we’ve got Fitchburg next week, the 6-1, 7-1 games are over. It’s going to be a battle every night like it was tonight.”
The game was knotted up at four with 7:12 remaining in the third period when Broc single handedly took over. Broc intercepted a Blue Devils pass to the blue line, muscled past the first defender, then deked another defender in the slot, giving him a momentary point blank look at the net, which he then rifled off a wrister beating the Murdock goalie stick side which put the Blue and White up 5-4.
