Lunenburg to receive $231,225 in federal funds

The school district has received $231,225 in aid from a federal education jobs grant, according to Superintendent Loxi-Jo Calmes.

“Gov. Deval Patrick [recently] allocated $204 million from the federal Education Jobs Fund to school districts across the Commonwealth, bringing state support for public schools to its highest level in history,” according to a press release from the governor’s office.

The bill President Obama signed into law on Aug. 10, “provides $26 billion nationwide to preserve jobs for teachers and other school-based employees,” according to the same press release.

Calmes said she is meeting with officials to determine how the money will be spent, as it must be used up by September 30, 2012.

But according to Calmes, the money must only be spent in certain areas: teacher’s raises, health insurance, tuition reimbursement, transportation subsidies, teachers, assistant principals and librarians.

In other grant news, the district also anticipates receiving $92,004 in funds from the Race to the Top competition.

“The Race to the Top Fund provides competitive grants to encourage and reward states that are creating the conditions for education innovation and reform,” according to the Department of Education’s Web site, ed.gov

Overall, “the program includes $4 billion for statewide reform grants and $350 million to support states working together to improve the quality of their assessments,” according to the Web site.

Massachusetts is among 9 states that won the competition.

Calmes said the funds would be used over a four-year period with $23,0001 being used a year.

In directing the funds toward a specific area, Calmes said the district would work in partnership with the school committee and the teacher’s association to “determine how these funds will be spent.”

Surprised by the amount of funding, Calmes said the district is delighted to receive it.

“[This] is going to provide some opportunities for our students as we move forward,” she said. “We want to be sure to use it in the way that benefits kids best.”
