Lunenburg student performance ranked average

New report reveals Lunenburg student performance levels are in synch with surrounding districts, but School Committee members said the school system should not be satisfied with average scores.


    During a meeting of the Lunenburg School Committee on Wednesday, Dec. 1, Lunenburg Public Schools Instructional Services Director, Karen Martin presented the Committee with a report on Lunenburg Public Schools’ current performance and growth reality.


    According to the report, the percent of Lunenburg students scoring at or above proficient levels for grades 4 through 10 in English language arts is comparable to surrounding districts. In math, students in the same grades also scored average and sometimes above-average levels. Performance and growth levels for Lunenburg reveal that the district is steady, but would benefit from improvement.


    Committee members were in agreement with Martin, that the school system shouldn’t be satisfied with the status quo, but should strive to be a great district.


    “We know our students can perform at higher levels,” said Superintendent Loxi-Jo Calmes.


    Martin pointed out that the school system needs to target students, particularly at-risk students, more specifically. Martin suggested that each school should identify their best practices, and have “permission to give up some things”; that is, abandon practices not yielding success.
