Lunenburg Ski Team ready to hit the slopes

The winter sports season has finally arrived, and Lunenburg’s ski team is working hard to be ready for another competitive winter.

Lunenburg High’s newest winter sport started three years ago, and since then Lunenburg has been making a good name for itself in the world of high school ski racing.

With strong commitment from the team members, and the help of coaches Jim Broden and Jen Amero, Lunenburg has been improving greatly over the past few years.

This year is no different. The ski team started dry-land training in late October to start conditioning and strength training before the snow fell and they were able to ski.

The LHS ski team starts off every dry-land practice by running a mile. Following this are the specific exercises used to focus on lower body strength, balance, and overall athleticism.

“It isn’t an easy sport, and a lot of people overlook the commitment and sacrifice put into it” said James Gray, senior at LHS and one of the captains of the ski team.

Since Wachusett Mountain has now opened, the ski team now goes up every Monday and Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. to train for two hours. Their on-snow training includes skiing practice courses, and any of the strenuous drills that range from skiing on one ski to hiking a small portion of the mountain with your skis on.

“We are working hard, and with a bunch of us coming back from last year, we have a good shot at making it to states this year” said Alicia Chapdelaine, senior at LHS, and captain of the ski team. The team seems pumped up and ready to go 100 percent this season.

If they continue to show the steady increase in skill they’ve been acquiring these past few years, this season should prove to be an exciting one for the LHS ski team.
