Lunenburg schools becoming ‘heart safe’
The Lunenburg School Committee met on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at the Brooks House. Among topics discussed were the proposed fiscal year 2012 budget for Health Services and a reading of the Committee’s Anti-Bullying Plan and Policy.
Susan Glenny gave a report on Health Services and the 2012 budget.
Through the Department of Public Health Essential School Health Services Mentored Grant, Health Services has conducted Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings for students in grades 1, 4, 7 and 10, one of three goals for the department. With the results from the screenings, Lunenburg learned that its rate of obesity was less than the 25 percent state average. The majority of the students fell in a percentile considered average.
Glenny said the Health Services department was also working on several goals for the new year, including efforts to provide resources and professional development for school nurses as well as writing/revising four policies.
The medication policy was revised, and new policies were enacted for life-threatening allergies, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use and a Do-Not-Resuscitate/Comfort Care policy. All are posted Online for review and public comment.
Glenny said that she is “thrilled” to have a defibrillator in each school, which she says finally makes the school “heart-safe.” The AED policy will outline the proper use, responsibilities and locations of the defibrillators.
