Lunenburg native John Henault nominated as a McDonald’s All-American athlete

St. Bernard’s small forward John Henault, a Lunenburg native, dazzled fans with his astounding scoring ability on the basketball court throughout his career. In the 6 foot 2 inch senior’s record setting final year for the Bernardians, he racked up a number of accolades, including being the first player nominated as a McDonald’s All-American in program history. Henault will likely go down as one of the best offensive players in St. Bernard’s basketball history.
“(Henault’s) scoring has so many weapons,” 16th year St. Bernard’s head coach Mark Pierce said. “He has a three point shot, a mid-range jumper, he can go to the goal; he’s the complete package as an offensive player. Then to complement himself, he’s a tremendous rebounder, and a great shot-blocker, so he brings the whole package to the floor.”
The McDonald’s All-American Game is the premier high school basketball all-star game in the country. Top players are split into two teams (of 12 players), East and West, and play a nationally televised game. There are alsodunk contests as well as three point competitions.
Some of the best players in basketball history have participated in the game since it was founded in 1977, including the Boston Celtics’ Shaquille O’Neil, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce,.
“It was great being nominated,” Henault said. “ I was very proud to be nominated amongst the best players in high school. When I was younger I was just playing basketball for fun; I guess I didn’t picture it how I would be playing now, but it’s just been so much fun, so that’s really what matters.”
