Lunenburg making strides working with Colonial Power Group

The town of Lunenburg is exploring the idea of possibly purchasing its electrical supply from a third-party supplier — Colonial Power Group of Marlborough — if a study conducted by the group reports that it is feasible to purchase its electrical supply from another company other than Unitil.

    If the town makes this move, Unitil would still distribute the electricity while the town would simply purchase the supply.


    “We are really at the beginning of this,” Kerry Speidel, town manager said in a phone interview with The Ledger Tuesday. “We have retained the services of Colonial Power Inc. and they will analyze all the electrical usage data for the town of Lunenburg and from all the businesses and residents, and will give us a report whether or not it is feasible to purchase (an) electrical supply from another company.”


    Speidel added: “They (Colonial Power) will look at our data and give us an idea of whether or not” we would be competitive if we purchased the supply on our own.


    While this plan is still preliminary, Selectman Tom Alonzo said the analysis was important, as it is not going to cost anything to have Colonial Power do an initial analysis to see if it makes sense.
