Lunenburg Historic District and Drawbridge Puppet Theater chosen as two of the top 1,000 places to visit in state

The roads located in Lunenburg’s center, — which was named as the Historic District in 1988— have not changed much since they were established more than 200 years ago, according to Lunenburg Historical Society’s Curator Jim Larkin.

In fact, many of the town’s roads can be traced “back to the town’s beginnings in the early Colonial period,” according to Larkin.

Drawbridge Puppet Theater was also named to the top 1,000 list. Check out next weeks copy of The Lunenburg Ledger for a full profile on this noteworthy local landmark.

“The 1,000 Great Places Commission was created by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Deval Patrick in 2009,” according to a press release from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.  “Its mission is to identify and recognize the 1,000 most truly special places in the commonwealth, in order to celebrate pride in our history and culture, increase knowledge of our natural surroundings, and encourage regional and international tourism.”

Overall there was a list of 12,000 nominations the Commission had whittle down to 1,000.
