Lunenburg falls to Narragansett 5-1 in first game of the season

The Lady Blue Knights’ softball team kicked off their 2010 season Monday afternoon against visiting Narragansett Regional. 

 

There were a lot of new faces to the Lunenburg lineup, as eight seniors departed from last year’s district’s squad, and this game marked the first ever varsity start for about six Lunenburg High School players. 

 

Lunenburg committed costly mistakes defensively, and couldn’t ignite the offense against the Warriors’ freshman ace Danielle Leblanc, as the Blue Knights dropped a 5-1 decision to Narragansett at Marshall Park.

 

“I’m glad the first one’s over, I think we’ll do better from here on out,” Lunenburg head coach Steve Cullinane said.  “We had a lot of mistakes and mental mistakes and I think we’ll fix those as we go along… (The newcomers) did pretty good.  (Narragansett) didn’t blow us out of the park, we were in the game the whole game and that’s where we want to be.  We’ll get better as the season goes along.”

 

Leblanc allowed one run (earned), four hits, while striking out 13 and walking three (all three of which were in the first two innings) in only her second ever career start.  Leblanc also got the job done with her bat, driving in two runs on the day.
