Lunenburg edges out 59-55 win in thriller home game

By Matt Stewart

The Lunenburg High boy’s basketball team had a lot riding on its final home game of the season Tuesday night against Bromfield.  A win and they were in to their second consecutive Division 3 District post-season tournament, a loss would force the Blue Knights to win in their final regular season game of the year to play on.  Luckily, Lunenburg edged out its fellow Mid Wach C foe, in a 59-55 thriller at the Lunenburg Memorial Gymnasium.

“It was a heck of a win,” Lunenburg head coach Jon Economo said.  “We needed one to get into districts, and this seals it.  It’s nice to do it at  your last home game, especially for the seniors.  They played well, and played their hearts out, I’m proud of them.”

Lunenburg currently holds a 9-8 record (6-3 Mid Wach C) and will have to face some tough competition in the first round, but its difficult regular season schedule should help to prepare them for the challenge.

“Our overall goal this year was to make Districts,” Economo said.  “We played a lot of tough teams, like North Middlesex and some other big schools this year.  Hopefully it’ll pay off (in the tournament) playing some of those harder teams.”

The Blue Knights were leading by two with 15 seconds left, when the ball was stolen by Bromfield and ended up in the hands of Brian McCullough who sank the easy lay-in to tie the game up at 55 a piece.  But the fast acting Lunenburg offense sprung into action on a breakout, with captain Michael Xarras controlling the rock.  Xarras dished the ball to fellow captain D.J. Guillette who banked home the lay-in with 7.3 seconds left to give the Blue Knights a two-point advantage at 57-55 on the eventual game winner.
