Local talent takes center stage during class plays

February is an exciting time of year for lovers of the stage - Thursday, Feb. 16 was opening night for Lunenburg High School’s competitive class plays.
A tradition in its 45th year, the competition gives sophomores, juniors, and seniors the chance to not only showcase their acting chops under the bright lights and but also to show their skills behind the curtains, operating lights and sets.
There was a flurry of activity in the final week of rehearsals to finish set production and put the final touches on costumes and hairpieces. Places were marked and lines rehearsed rigorously, each class looking to put forth a winning performance.
This year, two faculty advisors and one faculty director shared their expertise with the classes, working with the students and faculty to coordinate props, lights, and audio for the productions. One advisor, Sharon Kimball, has participated in the LHS competitive class plays since 1978.
"I love being involved in the dramatic process; you get to see the creative, fun-loving side of students,” said Kimball who advised the junior class in their production, A Storm in the Dorm by J.D. Drake.
Junior actress Jordan LaCross said the juniors chose Drake’s play, a story of the chaos that ensues when a late night visitor appears in a women's college dormitory, for its comedic merits and because its cast requirements fit the groups size and male to female ratio.
The juniors also had a director with stage experience. Junior Kayla Dill participated in both middle and high school theater, which led her to volunteer for the job.
