Local, fed funds to pay for Summer Street

At the Board of Selectmen meeting Tuesday night, three representatives from engineering company VanasseHangenBrustlin [VHB] presented a refresher for their plans to renovate Summer Street. The planned renovations, spanning from Route 13 to John Fitch Highway, have been in planning stages since 2009.
Furnishing the informative slide show with photos of the severely deteriorated state of the roadway, presenters Patricia Domigan, Laura Castelli and Steve Derdarian quickly won over interest and support from both the board and residents in the audience.
“[Summer Street] has a lot of issues that need to be looked at,” Domigan said. “General poor pavement condition, non-compliant intermittent sidewalks, missing pavement markings, and a failing drainage system.”
Conceptualized with a $3.6 million projected cost, the project has been approved by Massachusetts Department of transportation for $6.4 million, more than enough to cover expenses as the road is reworked.
“The town does not have to pay,” Domigan said. “We’re looking for funding through state and federal means.”
Three options were presented to the Board; Option A of one lane in each direction of the road, Option B of two lanes in each direction, and Option C of a center turn lane.
