Lunenburg High boys and girls track opened up the season against Mid Wach C foe Oakmont Regional, while tennis got their season started against Bromfield Monday afternoon at Lunenburg High School.
The Lady Blue Knights track squad was victorious 119-26, claiming their 101st consecutive League dual meet victory (dating back to 1990), all while senior Kelly Ulf shattered the school record in the high jump. Boys track faced tough competition from a talented Oakmont squad, and fell 98-47, while tennis lost a close battle to Bromfield 3-2.
“Ulf’s worked hard at the high jump,” Lunenburg girls head coach Steve Kyajohnian said. “This has been her goal since she saw these records, and I give her credit, she did it. It doesn’t come easy but you’re happy for kids who strive for their goals and then accomplish them. And to do it in the first meet of the season, you expect to do it at the end, but just like indoors, it was in the first meet, so that’s good.”
With a record tying jump already in hand, Ulf was down to her third and final jump to clear 5’4” and break the Lunenburg High girls high jump record set by Nijole Boudeau in 1992 (5’3”). Ulf battled through the pressure and fatigue and leaped over the bar, then shed tears of joy after becoming the best high jumper in the history of the school.
“At first (after tying the school record) I didn’t want to go up anymore because I was tired,” Ulf said. “Then I did it, and made 5’4”. I’ve been going to a trainer, Joe Patrone, who coaches at Peabody (High) and holds the school record (in the high jump) at the University of Rhode Island. So he’s been helping me with all of my drills and perfecting my technique.”
