Possibly the most noteworthy team of the winter sports season has been the Lunenburg High Girls’ Basketball Team. The Blue Knights recently wrapped up an impressive regular season slate and are in the midst of the Division 2 Central Mass. District Tournament.
Lunenburg compiled a 15-5 record in the regular season, which earned the Blue and White a four seed in the tournament. After the opening games of the season, it might not have appeared that the Blue Knights were going to be dominant.
However, the schedule helped the team. In order to be the best, you must play (and beat) the best, and Lunenburg had a very difficult non-conference schedule, which featured six games against Division 1 teams, including four early in the season. The Blue Knights suffered early losses to Division 1 Fitchburg, Leominster, Algonquin, and North Middlesex.
“[The division 1 schools] are pretty big schools and their population is a lot larger than us,” Lunenburg’s second-year head coach Robert Dalton said. “We started out early playing really tough games against tough teams. Our kids kept their heads up, and when we got into a schedule with teams the same population as ours, we started getting better and better.”
“I think playing the [division 1 school] made us stronger,” Dalton continued.
Lunenburg improved as the season progressed as the team posted a 10-0 record in Mid Wach C, which included multiple wins over Oakmont, Gardner, Narragansett, Littleton, and Clinton.
