Let’s talk Trash
By David Grossman
The town recently inked a ten-year deal with Casella Waste Management of Auburn to pick up the recyclables and yellow trash bags, which populate curbsides throughout Lunenburg.
When the new hauler officially took over these services from Waste Management on June 1, there was a cloud of confusion resulting in a barrage of phone calls to Lunenburg Town Hall and the Department of Public Works. In this light, The Ledger has done some digging and we want to report our findings.
First and foremost, any resident with any questions about the town’s waste management plan can locate all the rules and regulation on the new town Web site lunenburgma.gov. Simply follow the Residential Services link and then click the Trash/Recycling icon to pull up an Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file.
Essentially, what most residents need to know is that all trash needs to be placed on the curbside no later than 7 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day.
According to General Manager of Casella, Gerry Galena, Casella is currently using two crews to pick up curbside waste – one crew to pick up the recyclables and the other to pick up all trash bags. These crews also pick up the trash and recyclables at two different times during the scheduled day. Galena said the company is working on obtaining new trucks so that the recycling and the yellow bags can be picked up at the same time.
The yellow Pay As You Throw bags are available at most Lunenburg retail, convenience and package stores. You can buy 10 small bags for $12.50 or five large bags for $12.75. The large bags are limited to 40 pounds of waste. Multi-unit bags of 6 units or more are not eligible for trash pickup.
