The Lunenburg High School girls’ basketball team hit the road Thursday night for a date with Gardner High School in a key Mid-Wach C battle.

The Blue Knights kicked off the second half of their season schedule with a 55-60 loss to the Wildcats and in the process fell below the .500 mark on the campaign, dropping to 5-6 overall.

“We’re the type of team who needs to push the pace; we aren’t very good in the half court so we need to run the fast break as often as possible,” said Lunenburg interim head coach Frank Greene after the loss. “Gardner was able to slow us down a bit and take away our fast break so that worked against us a little bit.”

Greene, the program’s junior varsity head coach entering the year, is filling in for the remainder of the season for Bob Dalton, who resigned as Blue Knights head coach last week in the middle of his third season at the helm. Dalton stepped down after just eight games.

The Lunenburg loss stings as the squad has dropped four of its last five games with Oakmont coming to town on Tuesday night.

Leading the charge for the Blue Knights on Thursday night was senior Jessie Klauer with a game-high 19 points. Brittany Cullinane added 12 points and Molly O’Connell tossed in eight points in a losing effort. Mackenzie Hastings and Natalie Hansel each scored six points.
