The Lunenburg High School football team witnessed its winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Knights’ three-game winning streak was thwarted by visiting Mid-Wach C foe Narragansett Regional, spoiling Homecoming Weekend for Lunenburg with a final score of 21-6.
The loss knocks the Knights back to the .500 mark in their 2012 campaign at 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Mid-Wach C. The Warriors improved to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in Mid-Wach C.
"Narragansett's a good football team. They jumped on us early and put together some really good drives," said Lunenburg Head Coach Steve Boone. "As for the turnovers, good teams will capitalize on those things and [Narragansett] did that. I thought we played hard, but we made some mistakes that really hurt us."
The Warriors opened a 14-0 lead early thanks to a Joe O'Neil two-yard touchdown run with 5:24 to play in the opening quarter. Scott Favreau added the extra point. O’Neil’s touchdown and Favreau’s kick were the only points of the first quarter. O’Neil finished with a game-high 167 yards rushing on 20 carries and two touchdowns.
A Lunenburg lost fumble set the Warriors up with great field position and Trevor Richard capped a scoring drive for the guests with a one-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and Favereau hit the extra point with 9:14 remaining.
Lunenburg attempted to cut into the deficit when Cody Lanzilotti mailed a catch on fourth down, hauling in a pass from quarterback Greg Abare and taking off for the end zone. The Lunenburg sophomore didn’t stop until he crossed the goal line for a 33-yard touchdown to put the hosts on the scoreboard. The extra point attempt was no good, keeping the score at 14-6 with seven minutes left in the half.
