Since 1989, six Lunenburg High School girl high jumpers have reached the old LHS school record of five feet.
On Saturday Dec. 12 Kelly Ulf broke the old record of five feet with a jump clearing five feet and one inch.
Kelly Ulf, a three-sport senior (cross-country, indoor and outdoor track), won the Don Woods Invitational track meet on this past Saturday.
The Don Woods Invitational track meet is dedicated to the late Don Woods who was a Fitchburg High School graduate, Fitchburg track coach, and Central Mass track and field official.
Ulf (literally) jumped into first place with by reaching a height of five feet and one inch.
This left quite a large gap between herself and the rest of the contenders.
The second place jump was four feet, ten inches.
Ulf trained hard over the summer, receiving specific high jump training from former URI track and field athlete Joe Patrone, and committed a lot of time to her track career. During the indoor track season the LHS track team practices every day.
“Coach Kyajohnian pushes us hard, but the hard work pays off in our results,” said Ulf.
Her new record has added support to the saying practice makes perfect.
Kelly has been high jumping since she was in eighth grade, and started indoor track her freshman year.
Ulf started out jumping under four feet, eight inches. She said she has worked hard over the past few years towards breaking the school record, and now that she has, she wants to keep going up, and do the best she can this year for LHS.
“I was really excited that I broke the record, and my new goal is to reach five feet five inches, and to high jump in college,” said Ulf.
Even though Lunenburg was represented at the Don Woods Invitational meet by Kelly Ulf and Erica Hebert, the whole team was not in attendance.
“I wasn’t as excited without the whole team there to celebrate,” said Ulf of her record-breaking jump.
The first Mid Wachusett Division D league will meet on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 9 a.m.
Ulf has high hopes for her performance this Saturday.
Last year, the division winner had a best of five feet, two inches.
With Ulf’s steady progress, and determination she is on track to ranking high up in the league standings this season.
