Girl’s Indoor Track Team celebrates a record breaking winter season
By Matt Stewart
After losing a talented group of seniors from last year’s team, the Lunenburg High girl’s indoor track team picked up where it left off and finished strong once again this indoor season, behind a strong core of returnees and the help of some impressive newcomers.
“Starting off the season we knew we had lost a lot of seniors from last year’s class, a very good track class, and this year going in we just had a lot of younger kids step up, and some of the senior leadership were great models,” Lunenburg head coach Steve Kyajohnian said. “The kids have a really good work ethic, they practice hard, and with that type of work ethic they improve over the season.”
Lunenburg earned a split of the Mid Wach C crown, placing second in the dual meet season, and then capturing the Mid Wach C Championship Meet title. The Blue Knights later finished a respectable second, out of 20+ team field, in the District E Division 2 meet, and had a handful of athletes have strong performances at the State meets, including a fifth place team finish in the Division IV State Meet.
“We had some great accomplishments this season,” Kyajohnian said. “In those bigger meets I thought Bromfield was to the team to beat, and they did win some, but we did get runner up to them in the districts which is a good accomplishment. “
Junior Jennifer Markham is one of the top distance runners in the state, as she finished 11th overall at the All-State Meet in the 1,000m run with a school record setting time of (3:05.48), and fourth overall in the event at the State Division IV Meet (3:05.63). Markham, who was also a Mid Wach C champ in the 1,000 and runner up in the 2 mile, was part of the 4X800m relay team, (also comprised of Gabriella Guilette, Brooke Hansel, and Sydney Sanford), that won the Division IV State title with a school record setting time of 9:49.44.
