Eighth grade girls’ team takes out Winchendon 44-33 Sunday

By Michael James LeClair

While the Lunenburg High School winter sports teams have yet to begin playing games, the Lunenburg Junior Basketball League was in action this past weekend.

On Sunday the Lunenburg eighth grade girls’ team welcomed Winchendon to the Turkey Hill Middle School.

Lunenburg spread the scoring out as nine different players found their way into the scorebook to help lead the home team to a 44-33 win.

With the win Lunenburg improves to 2-1 on the season. After dropping its first game of the year against Orange the Blue Knights have won back-to-back games, knocking off Leominster White last Sunday at Leominster High School.

“That’s a very good win for us against a very good Winchendon team. Everybody worked hard. We have a deep bench so we can keep working different girls in and continue to play with fresh bodies,” said Lunenburg head coach Mike Masciarelli. “That made a big difference tonight. Winchendon just wouldn’t go away. They kept coming at us and stayed within striking distance but our girls were able to weather the storm and protect the lead.”
