DPW construction planned to begin in April

By Chuck Amaral

The DPW Building Committee, updated the Board on the results of a recent DPW rennovation feasibility study. Gregg Yanchenko of Helene Karl Architects told the board that there will be additions made to the building, including a new mechanic’s bay, but the existing building will remain “pretty much intact.”

Existing doors will be replaced and upgraded. March 16 is the date for pre-bids, with construction planned for April 25.

“I know that endless hours were spent on the project,” said Chairperson Paula Bertram.

Bertram asked if OSHA violations were being addressed, as the stairway to the building’s mezzanine is not up to code, and the building has had problems with air quality. Yanchenko said that the building will have a new heating and cooling system, and that all air quality safety issues will be brought up to code.

The committee is also working on the sprinkler system, and has already put in a new gas service, as the previous service was, according to Yanchenko, “probably 40 years old.” There will also be pavement patching, and the nearby leech field may be slightly moderated.

In March, the committee will go out to bid for the project. The roof will also be replaced in full by a brand-new membrane roof. Dave Matthews agrees that it’s extremely important that the building be weather-tight.
