Conceptual plans take shape for 24-hour animal hospital on Electric Avenue

The rock pile across from Twin City Baptist Temple on Electric Avenue may be home to a 24-hour animal hospital, according to conceptual plans reviewed Monday by the Planning Board.

“It’s a pet-care center … it’s quite a large building,” Planning Director Marion Benson said of Dr. Carl Flinkstrom’s vision. “It is going to be very large, lots of rooms … boarding … a hospital and they will be training dogs too,” she said.

Benson said it will be similar to the Wachusett Animal Hospital and Pet Retreat, scheduled to open this week in Westminster. Flinkstrom, who is the owner/operator of the Lunenburg Veterinary Hospital, at 109 Massachusetts Ave., is not connected to the Westminster facility.

She said the lot where Flinkstrom is hoping the new pet-care center will go is currently zoned residential and will need a special permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals to be changed to professional use.

Planning Board members each expressed concerns with the possibility  of the development.
