Bullying and ways to counter effects on students

When South Hadley High’s Phoebe Prince’s suicide became public in January, the problem of bullying was brought center stage to communities across the Northeast.

 

Bullying has always been addressed in communities, but the death of the 15-year-old, who was the victim of harassment at school and outside via text messaging and social networking sites prior to her death, struck a chord with people across the state of Massachusetts.

 

It prompted the Massachusetts State Legislature to propose an anti-bullying bill which has yet to be finalized and sent to a vote.

 

Lunenburg Representative Jennifer Benson said the specifics of the bill have not been ironed out.

 

“It is still a work in progress,” she said. “It is going to be process of looking through what is common in all 11 pieces of the legislation” so we are able to consolidate them all into one bill.
