The Lunenburg/Ayer High School hockey team pulled off its second huge upset in the past week, this time against undefeated Oakmont Regional, a team that many feel is the frontrunner to capture the Division 3A Central Mass title.
In a back-and-forth game through the first two periods, the Blue Knights held a slim 4-3 lead at the end of the second intermission, which was well within striking distance of the potent Oakmont offense.
However, the Blue Knights caught fire, dominating the third period en route to a 7-3 victory Monday evening at Fitchburg State College’s Wallace Civic Center.
“(Oakmont’s) arguably the best team in the state in 3A, nobody was going to argue that, and they may well still be,” Lunenburg/Ayer head coach Eric Short said. “We were able to play them 3-2 twice early in the season so we knew we could play with them. We knew we’d have to play an outstanding game to beat them, and we went above and beyond that tonight...we went and played probably the best third period that I’ve had a team play in 10 years of coaching, totally outstanding from the goaltender, to the defensemen and the forwards. It was a total team win."
