Blue Knights are playoff bound again

By Matt Stewart

The Lunenburg Blue Knights softball team is playoff bound again for the fourth straight year following an 18-3 win over Bromfield last Friday. After a red-hot start LHS hit an up-hill climb with the most difficult part of its schedule, but seem to be pulling it together at the right time, hoping to get over the hurdle of making it past the first round of the competitive Division 2 District tournament.

“The last four years we’ve made the districts,” Lunenburg head coach Steve Cullinane said. “The last four years we’ve been in, we’ve been knocked out in the first round, so we’d like to at least get a couple of wins in the districts this year.”

Lunenburg started the year with a 7-1 record, then cooled off a bit going 3-5 since then.

“We were playing a lot of non-league games during the 7-1 stretch that probably aren’t as good as the team’s in our league,” Cullinane said. “When we got into the league it was a little more competitive. We lost to Narragansett twice on three hitters both times, 6-2, 6-0, and they are in first place in our league. We had some errors, and in the tight games we got a little tight ourselves, and you kind of expect that with a young team (three freshmen starting).”

The Blue Knights camaraderie will undoubtedly play a role as it pursues success for the rest of the season, and despite having the record dip slightly over the past couple of weeks, the young Lunenburg squad is continuing to show improvement which will hopefully bode well come playoff time.

“The team has really come together this year, it’s a really close knit group, which has helped us to come back from some close games that we lost,” Cullinane said. “The girls do a nice job of keeping each other up and keeping us on the right track. Even though we were 7-1 to begin the year, I think we’ve improved up to this point. We’re starting to play pretty well now, again.”
