Big school issues estimated to cost millions to fix

By Kristen Levine

At the Wednesday School Committee meeting held at Lunenburg High School, Director of Facilities John Londa presented a detailed and troubling account of school conditions. The three buildings in question, T.C. Passios Elementary School, Turkey Hill Middle School, and Lunenburg High School, have a slew of issues that demand resolution, at high expense.

Londa began his presentation with the high school.

“The school was built in 1957, and is currently in its fifty-fourth year of operation,” Londa stated. “Since it first opened the school has had several major repairs and many minor ones in an attempt to meet needs. Roofing was replaced in 1984 in all flat portions of the school, and after 27 years it is beginning to show failure.”

The failing spots have responded decently to patch jobs, but the repairs are meant to be temporary and will last less than a year.
“The last storm we had, there was a leak in the cafeteria, a restroom, and two classrooms,” Londa said. “We haven’t seen problematic conditions this winter with snow on the roof, but it won’t stay that way every year.”

Along with the roofing issues, Londa stated that the school is currently not in compliance with the American Disabilities Act, with ineffective handicap accessibility to the building.

“The current ramps are too steep, and restroom access is difficult because of narrow doorways,” Londa said. “It’s impossible to solve the doorway issue without major layout changes.”
