There is never a dull moment in the Lunenburg Latin Club.

Whether you are off competing in a catapult competition, participating in one of many Certamen (Latin for “competition”) academic events, at a banquet, or off on an educational school trip, there’s just always something fun and exciting going on.

Lunenburg’s Latin club has existed for nearly 30 years, and student interest and involvement shows no sign of dieing down according to its members.

With over 20 high school and middle school students involved, the Latin Club has a highly regarded reputation.

Last year they placed third overall in a statewide convention.

Multiple times a year, the Latin club participates in a Certamen. A Certamen is a competition between many schools with prizes for winners.

Every Certamen’s results are kept and there are standings just like any other varsity sport. Lunenburg has not yet competed in any Certamens this year, but last year out of the three Certamen, Lunenburg placed first twice, and second.

Every year the Luneburg Latin club goes to the State Latin Convention where the finalists from all the certamen in the state compete to find a state-wide top Latin student.

“It’s a ton of fun” said Dylan Drolette, a LHS senior, and 1st Vice President of the Latin club. “It’s a lot of work, but in the end it’s all worth it.”

The Latin Club will also be attending Classics’ Day on December 10 in Boston. Classics’ Day is an event at Boston University that was planned by Grace Thomas, the President of the Lunenburg Latin Club. It will consist of lectures and other fun events centered on heroes and villains of ancient mythology.

The Latin Club is currently working on a Web site, and a school newsletter. They are hoping to see even more involvement from students at LHS and Turkey Hill Middle School as the Club grows. All the current members of the club show great enthusiasm and commitment, so it’s safe to say the Club will remain a fun and exciting experience for classics students in Lunenburg for many more years to come.
