School Comm Set to Vote on School Start Times
The School Committee decided they will take a vote on school start times for the Fall 2016 school year at their next meeting June 3, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, and heard from Turkey Hill Middle School Principal Timothy Santry on his fiscal year 2016 school improvement plan at their meeting on May 20.
The Start-Time Sub-committee has recommended shifting the start time at the high school to 8 a.m., THMS to 8:50 a.m., and the primary school to 9 a.m.
Over the past few months the sub-committee has reviewed survey results, looked at research indicating the benefits of changing start times to accom
modate development, and determined a way to make transportation to and from Lunenburg schools cost effective.
Santry presented his goals for improving THMS next year, and focused on personal growth, critical thinking, and responsible community membership for students. Santry plans to make Common Core State Standards based curriculum maps available to the public on the school’s website, embed interventions in the daily schedule for high achieving students using a web-based assessment to ensure all students are challenged and supported, and to continue looking for areas of improvement through analysis and reporting.
In order to ensure social-emotional needs of students are met, Santry’s plan indicates using direct instruction in smaller group settings, and supporting communication between school and home by using wireless technology and building more capacity for technology for teachers in the classroom.
